  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, and light brown sugar. Sprinkle active dried yeast on top and let it sit until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, remaining brown sugar, egg, salt, mixed spice, cinnamon, and vanilla. Stir in sultanas until combined.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and gradually add bread flour, mixing until a rough dough forms.
  4. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Divide the dough into 12 pieces and shape each into a ball, placing them in a greased baking dish.
  6. Cover the dish and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes to 1 hour, until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) while the buns are rising.
  8. Mix flour with enough water to create a thick paste, then pipe crosses over the buns. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.
