  • 1 cup Hoisin Sauce For gluten-free, use a gluten-free version or homemade.
  • 1 cup Oyster Sauce Vegetarian substitute: a mixture of soy sauce and hoisin.
  • 1/2 cup Molasses Can swap with honey.
  • 1/2 cup Soy Sauce Replace with tamari or coconut aminos for gluten-free.
  • 1/2 cup Shaoxing Wine Omit or use sake.
  • 4 cloves Garlic Grated, can use garlic powder.
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Grated, can replace with ground ginger.
  • 1 tbsp Five Spice Powder Omit or use cinnamon.
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust according to taste.

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small saucepan, gather all the ingredients for your Chinese BBQ Sauce: brown sugar, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, molasses, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, garlic, ginger, five spice powder, and salt. Stir everything together thoroughly.
  2. Place the saucepan on the stove and heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly. The sugar should completely dissolve within about 3–5 minutes.
  3. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, allowing it to cook for an additional 8-10 minutes until it thickens.
  4. Once thickened, remove the saucepan from heat and let the sauce cool for about 10 minutes.
  5. Carefully transfer the cooled sauce into an airtight container for storage.
